Using monocular microscopes with younger students, or students who haven't had much experience in a Science setting:
Using a basic microscopes we went through the steps very carefully:

  • Look from side - put lowest power lens in place
  • Look through eyepiece - find the circle of light
- adjust the mirror to make the circle bright
  • Look from the side - place slide on stage
- carefully wind down
- place object into the field of view (look for light)
- look through eyepiece - move the slide carefully to see movement
- adjust focus away from slide carefully

This site has a Virtual Microscope
which the kids can use to practice these skills before using the real microscope. The site also has links to movie clips showing how to use a monocular microscope.
